Ramshorn Snail
The Ramshorn Snail (Planorbarius corneus) is amongst the most attractive of Aquatic Snails, naturally living in the edges of pools, ponds and rivers. Ramshorns have a planispiral type shell which in basic terms means a coil like shape, flat coiled to be precise.
Although these snails can be found in UK waters naturally the snail is being bred more and more for the aquatics trade for both fish food and they are sold as aquarium clean-up crew.
The fact that these snails have been bred so much in snail’s farms means we now have different colours as well. In the wild the ramshorn is brown or a near blackish appearance but in captivity these beautiful snails have been bred into red and blue also.
Ramshorn Snails make for great live fish food for Puffer Fish, which is why we at Red Ramshorn.co.uk breed the Red Ramshorn snail. We specialize in the Red Ramshorn Snail and in fact that is all we sell along with a few items that may help in the handling of the snails. Puffer fish as you may know need to keep their teeth well manicured, and so giving your puffer the occasional snail snack will greatly help towards keeping them away from the dentist. The shell provides the roughage and the meaty body provides a great meal for the fish. Puffer fish love the Ramshorn snail and although I've never tasted one if you have a puffer you will know what I mean.
The Ramshorn Snail also feeds on algae and detritus which make them the perfect host in your home aquarium. Not only do they cosmetically look good in a fish tank but do a great job of eating algae, uneaten fish food, flakes, pellets and much more. They don't tend to eat healthy plants, only the rotting plants. Which is a plus if you keep the snails in a mixed fish / plant tank.
Our Ramshorn Snail Anatomy Page is very interesting should you wish to know the in's and out's of a snail.
